About

What is Kaspa (KAS)?

Everything you need to know about Kaspa: origin, how it works, supply and official resources.

Kaspa (KAS) was launched in November 2021 under a fair-launched model, with no pre-mine, no pre-sale, and no coin allocations. The network is community-managed and was designed to operate as a global sequencer for traditional markets and for the decentralized crypto ecosystem.

Technology: Proof of Work and BlockDAG

Kaspa combines Proof of Work with the BlockDAG consensus protocol, using GHOSTDAG. The proposal is to sustain a secure environment while allowing a faster block rate, with reduced confirmations compared to network delays.

The system is also described through five properties: hard money principles, security-first foundations inspired by the Bitcoin ethos, mining focused on decentralization through block rate, superior speed, and support for smart contract development via based-rollups.

What Kaspa is used for

Kaspa’s goal is to advance as a Layer 1 (L1) network focused on sequencing and digital exchange, aligning with the vision of a medium of exchange. The architecture seeks to maintain very small confirmation times, influenced mainly by internet latency.

With the use of based-rollups, the network intends to enable smart contracts without fragmenting liquidity excessively.

Network features and support for future layers

The implementation includes subprotocols such as Reachability for querying the DAG topology and SPV proofs. There is also block data pruning, with future plans mentioned for block header pruning.

Later support for subnetworks was intended to facilitate future implementations of layer 2 solutions within the Kaspa ecosystem.
