About

What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Everything you need to know about Bitcoin: origin, how it works, supply and official resources.

Bitcoin holds the title of pioneer among global decentralized digital currencies. Conceived in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto — the codename of a programmer or collective whose real identity remains anonymous —, it operates through a peer-to-peer (P2P) system. This means that financial transfers occur directly between the people involved, eliminating the role of financial institutions or governments.

How does the technology behind it work?

The foundation that supports Bitcoin is the blockchain (a kind of digital, public, and shared ledger), which serves to document all money transfers permanently and protected against fraud. For everything to work in harmony, the network adopts the Proof-of-Work protocol, in which connected computers (called miners) verify the operations and organize them into new data blocks.

A brief history

The initial proposal emerged at the end of 2008, when Nakamoto published the technical document (known as the whitepaper) titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System". Shortly afterward, in January of 2009, the system came to life with the creation of the so-called "genesis block" — the network's ground zero. Over the years, the project evolved from a technical experiment to establish itself as the digital asset of greatest value and relevance in the market.

Understanding Bitcoin mining

Mining activity is nothing more than the mechanism that provides security and records movements on the blockchain. For this to happen, professionals and enthusiasts use extremely high-performance hardware dedicated to solving complex mathematical puzzles. Whoever manages to solve the puzzle first earns the right to register the block and, in return, is rewarded with fractions of newly created bitcoins and with the fees paid by those who carried out the transactions.
