Now, Ubisoft, a pioneer in traditional game publishing, is venturing even deeper into uncharted blockchain territory with the release of its upcoming Web3 game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles.
Quietly unveiled last week, Champions Tactics is described as a player versus player (PvP) tactical RPG experience in the PC world. No gameplay footage has been released, but a teaser trailer hints at involvement in a fantasy universe. The characters' silhouettes seem to evoke an aesthetic of tabletop game figures, giving clues to the game's likely appearance.
In the official description, players are invited to assemble a team of mythical champions, engage in thrilling tactical battles against other players, and discover the legends of the dark and mystical world of Grimoria.
Champions Tactics stands out for being the first Ubisoft game built on Oasys, a network blockchain centered on games that have already aroused the interest of industry giants such as Square Enix, Sega and Bandai Namco. This is a big step for Ubisoft, showing its commitment to further exploring blockchain technology.
Players will have access to the game via a dedicated desktop app, suggesting it won't be a web-based game. The official website also mentions a "free drop at launch", indicating that Champions Tactics may require an NFT or token to play, but Ubisoft will offer this for free, at least initially.
Ubisoft already caused an uproar in the gaming world in 2021 when it revealed that it would release NFT-based items on the Tezos blockchain for the PC version of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint. The news was met with skepticism by many gamers, concerned about digital asset speculation, scams in the NFT space, and the suspicion that publishers would use NFTs to try to extract more money from players. However, Ubisoft remains steadfast in its exploration of the Web3 space, showing that it's willing to push the boundaries of what's possible in the gaming world.
