The co-founder of Ethereum (ETH), Vitalik Buterin, recently revealed what the next phase will be for the development of the network Ethereum (ETH). The next significant step in the evolution of blockchain has been called “The Purge".

Buterin recently shared insights into efforts to simplify the Ethereum protocol and improve its security measures.

“A quick note on the next steps in simplifying the Ethereum protocol and decreasing node resource load (aka “the purge”),” he shared.

In a communication, Vitalik Buterin explained that “The Purge” is a project that aims to reduce Ethereum and settle technical debts.

“This EIP is an important example of an often underappreciated part of Ethereum protocol development: the effort to simplify the protocol by removing complexity and adding new security guarantees. This is a big part of what I have labeled “The Purge”: the project of shorting Ethereum and paying off technical debt. There will be more EIPs with a similar spirit, and so it is worth understanding how EIP-6780, in particular, achieves the goal, and what other EIPs may exist in the future.”

The developers highlighted the Next Steps of the Purge: “One of the lesser-known EIPs in the recent Dencun hard fork is EIP-6780, which removed most of the functionality of the SELFDESTRUCT opcode.” Buterin also explained how EIP-6780 simplifies the Ethereum protocol:

“EIP-6780 reduces the functionality of the SELFDESTRUCT opcode, which destroys the contract that calls it and empties its code and storage, so that it only works if the contract was created during the same transaction. This in itself does not represent a decrease in the complexity of the specification”, stated the developers.

O document also explained that, however, the new feature improves implementations by introducing two new invariants: After EIP-6780, there is a maximum number of storage slots (approximately: gas limit/5000) that can be edited in a single block ; If a contract has a non-empty code at the beginning of a transaction or block, it will have the same code at the end of that transaction or block.
