Tether announced an investment of US$ 20 million in Mercado Bitcoin, one of the leading cryptocurrency platforms in Latin America. The move marks a relevant step in the company's strategy to expand its regional presence and support the development of blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
The investment will be directed toward expanding the Brazilian platform's payments network, in addition to strengthening the offering of tokenized assets and lending services. The initiative also includes advancing on-chain capital markets and accelerating the company's international growth plans.
Founded in 2013, Mercado Bitcoin has moved beyond operating solely as a cryptocurrency exchange and has begun offering a broader range of digital financial services. Currently, the platform includes crypto trading, tokenized securities, stablecoin payment solutions, and banking infrastructure aimed at the global market.
According to data released by the company, the user base has already reached around 4,5 million clients. In addition, Mercado Bitcoin surpassed the R$ 2 billion mark in issued tokenized assets, consolidating its presence in the asset digitization segment in Brazil.
The company also holds more than 10 regulatory licenses in Brazil and Europe, including authorization from the Central Bank of Brazil to operate as a payment institution. This positioning reinforces the integration between technological innovation and regulatory compliance.
For Tether, the investment goes beyond expanding the use of USDT. The company seeks to support projects that broaden the use of blockchain in digital payments and regulated financial services, with a focus on emerging markets.
The move comes amid a scenario of accelerated growth in cryptocurrency adoption in Latin America. Factors such as high inflation in some countries, greater demand for dollar-pegged stablecoins, and institutional interest in tokenization have driven the sector's development.
The partnership also reinforces the use of stablecoins in international transactions, savings, and commercial operations. As a result, Mercado Bitcoin expands its ability to compete with traditional financial institutions while advancing its offering of blockchain-based digital financial products.
