- The FTX case remains relevant to the cryptocurrency market.
FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried has formally requested a presidential pardon from current US President Donald Trump, more than two years after being found guilty of crimes related to the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange.
Documents filed with the Department of Justice's Office of Pardon Attorney show that the former executive has submitted a request for a "pardon after serving his sentence." This move represents another step in Bankman-Fried's strategy to try to reverse or mitigate the consequences of his conviction.
The initiative comes at a time when Trump has frequently used his constitutional powers of clemency during his second term. In recent months, several convicts of financial and white-collar crimes have received some form of judicial relief through presidential decisions.
Bankman-Fried is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence, determined in March 2024. The sentence resulted from his conviction for fraud and conspiracy related to the collapse of FTX in 2022, an episode that caused billions of dollars in losses for clients and investors and marked one of the most impactful moments in the history of the cryptocurrency market.
In a recent interview with FOX Business from prison, the founder of FTX expressed hope regarding his clemency request. According to him, there is "certainly" an expectation of obtaining a presidential pardon. However, he avoided commenting on possible lobbying efforts by family members or political allies.
During the conversation, Bankman-Fried reiterated that he considers the process that led to his conviction unfair. The former billionaire argued that many of FTX's creditors have been largely compensated thanks to the recovery seen in cryptocurrency markets since the company's collapse.
In addition to defending his position on the case, he commented on opportunities he believes he missed during his incarceration. Among them, he highlighted the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence sector, a topic that has attracted significant investment in recent years.
The former CEO also praised the businesses led by Elon Musk, especially citing SpaceX as a company with strong long-term growth potential and a consistent ability to execute its projects. While awaiting any decision related to his pardon request, Bankman-Fried remains in prison and continues trying to rebuild his public narrative surrounding the case that led to the downfall of FTX.
