About
Everything you need to know about Counterparty: origin, how it works, supply and official resources.
Counterparty is a platform for creating and trading assets directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. It combines a protocol, a set of specifications, and an API so that users can develop their own assets. For this reason, Counterparty is often compared to ecosystems such as Waves and Ethereum, with the difference of integrating directly with Bitcoin.
In Counterparty, the rules and requirements needed to represent assets on Bitcoin are defined by the platform itself. With this, users can create digital assets and then trade them on the blockchain base. This design seeks to offer an infrastructure similar to what standards such as ERC-20 provide in other environments, but with a focus on the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Instead of treating everything as a “token,” the platform focuses on “assets,” which can represent anything from values and rare items to rights and digital records.
A common use of digital assets is to serve as a marker of ownership or of rights associated with a stake. This type of model can represent, for example, proportional distribution linked to voting in a group. It can also be used as a reference for dividend payments in BTC based on quantities held of the corresponding asset.
In addition to currencies, Counterparty can be applied to representations of digital objects, share management, and even website reputation elements.
Because it operates on the Bitcoin blockchain, Counterparty inherits the security and reliability associated with the network, as well as its challenges. It is an old project, predating the launch of Ethereum in 2014, and it originally paved the way for asset creation.
Over time, its relevance declined, largely due to the popularization of the ERC-20 standard on other platforms.
