Sky (SKY) is a governance token of the Sky Protocol, functioning as a kind of digital stake for voting on ecosystem decisions. The project was launched in 2024 as a rebrand and upgrade of the Maker Protocol, focused on enabling people to trade, store resources, and receive rewards while maintaining control of their funds.

Purpose and value proposition

The Sky Protocol is based on the use of a system centered on a stablecoin called USDS, which seeks to maintain the value of one United States dollar. The proposal is to offer security and simplicity for using the network without relying on intermediaries controlling users' assets.

With this structure, the protocol fits into DeFi models and connects to an ecosystem focused on stablecoins, while keeping the operation decentralized.

Technology: smart contracts and automated execution

The protocol is executed through smart contracts, which automate the system's rules and reduce the need for an intermediary. Thus, interactions are tied to the functioning of these programmable guarantees.

To improve usability across networks, the Sky Protocol uses SkyLink, designed to connect funds across different blockchains with faster and lower-cost transactions.

How SKY is used in the ecosystem

The protocol operates with two main tokens: USDS for stable savings and SKY for governance. SKY can also be locked in the Staking Engine, in a staking mechanism to help support the operation of the network and generate rewards.

In addition to governance, staking SKY allows the holder to borrow USDS, making the token a key element both for system decisions and for generating utility within the Sky Protocol.

Community governance

The Sky Protocol is not managed by a single CEO or by a traditional core of investors. Administration is conducted by the global community of SKY holders, who participate in relevant system changes through voting.
