Firo (FIRO) emerged in 2016, initially as Zcoin, with a focus on privacy for use as digital currency. The core proposal is to offer digital “cash” while preserving sensitive transaction information. To achieve this, the network combines privacy approaches with a hybrid security architecture.

Zero Knowledge and privacy protocols

Firo is known for its pioneering use of zero-knowledge proofs in cryptography. Over time, it developed and implemented privacy protocols, including Zerocoin, Sigma, and Lelantus, as well as the Lelantus Spark evolution.

Lelantus Spark was built by Firo itself and can conceal the sender, recipient, and amount. The framework can also be adapted to hide asset types, maintaining a modular design aimed at facilitating audits and future updates.

How security and finalization work

Firo uses a hybrid model that combines Proof-of-Work (PoW) mining with a masternode layer. This layer relies on Long-Living Masternode Quorums (LLMQs), which contribute ChainLocks and InstantSend to strengthen network finalization and resilience.

Dandelion++ and origin privacy

In operations, the network uses Dandelion++, which helps conceal the source IP of transactions. As a result, reliance on external services such as Tor or i2P is reduced.

Practical use and expansion with Spark Assets

In 2018, the Firo/Zcoin blockchain was used in Thai Democrat Party elections to select its party leader. In addition, the ecosystem includes Spark Assets, which allows the creation of tokens with privacy preservation.
