About

What is Ethereum (ETH)?

Everything you need to know about Ethereum: origin, how it works, supply and official resources.

Ethereum (ETH) is a global, open-source platform for decentralized applications. Rather than acting only as a currency, the network functions as a programmable computer, allowing developers to create services and smart contracts without central control.

How Ethereum works

The network executes transactions and smart contracts through thousands of independent validator nodes. These participants process operations and make execution happen on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that carry out agreements when conditions are met. To participate in validation, validators stake ETH as collateral, receiving rewards and being subject to penalties in case of malicious behavior.

What ETH is used for

ETH is used to pay transaction fees (gas) on the network. The network also uses ETH in staking to help ensure the security and operation of the protocol.

In addition, the asset can act as collateral in DeFi protocols and as a means for acquiring NFTs and other digital assets.

From Proof of Work to Proof of Stake and impact

The transition to Proof of Stake in September of 2022 significantly reduced energy consumption, while also strengthening network security. As a result, Ethereum began operating with validators instead of mining.

The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee that is burned with each transaction, generating deflationary pressure when more ETH is destroyed than what is distributed to validators during periods of higher activity.

History and adoption

Ethereum was proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin and launched in July of 2015 after fundraising through crowdfunding. Among the milestones are the Beacon Chain in 2020, the London upgrade in 2021 with fee burning, and the Merge to Proof of Stake in 2022.

Within the Ethereum Ecosystem, the platform hosts DeFi applications, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. There was also approval of spot Ethereum ETFs by the SEC, expanding the form of access for traditional investors.
