About

What is Dogecoin (DOGE)?

Everything you need to know about Dogecoin: origin, how it works, supply and official resources.

Dogecoin (DOGE) is an open-source digital currency inspired by the “Doge” meme. It was created to function as a peer-to-peer medium for fast payments and also for “digital tipping.” Instead of relying on a company, the proposal is supported by a global community and the Dogecoin Foundation, in a decentralized model.

How Dogecoin works

The network operates as a fork of LuckyCoin, which in turn is a fork of Litecoin. Consensus uses Proof of Work (PoW), with mining based on the Scrypt algorithm to keep the process efficient. New blocks are processed every 60 seconds.

Mining technology and security

A technical differentiator is merged mining, which allows miners to secure Dogecoin while mining other networks that use Scrypt, such as Litecoin. This helps coordinate blockchain security with mining activity in related ecosystems.

Issuance, fees, and governance

To keep transaction fees low and allow the network to operate continuously, Dogecoin adopts an unlimited supply, with new coins being added forever. In terms of management, the project is led by volunteers and the Dogecoin Foundation, without a central corporate structure.

Origin and regulatory classification

Launched in 2013, Dogecoin was created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a market parody, with no public sale and no venture capital fundraising. In March 2026, a joint SEC and CFTC framework classified Dogecoin as a digital commodity, placing it in the same category of assets as gold or oil.
