About

What is Bitcoin Cash (BCH)?

Everything you need to know about Bitcoin Cash: origin, how it works, supply and official resources.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a hard fork of Bitcoin with a protocol update aimed at addressing capacity limitations on the chain. The proposal is to maintain a network experience more aligned with a Bitcoin without Segregated Witness (SegWit), with updates made primarily through hard forks.

Technology and protocol proposal

Bitcoin Cash was created to restore essential characteristics of the original Bitcoin, emphasizing more viable transactions on the on-chain layer. The project focuses on scaling the use of the protocol without changing Bitcoin's original economic rules.

Scalability and transaction performance

The core upgrade occurred on August 1, 2017, with a version of Bitcoin Core adapted for BCH. Among the changes, there was an increase in the block size limit from 1MB to 8MB, allowing miners to process up to 8 times more payments per second compared to Bitcoin.

History and network evolution

In terms of governance, the Bitcoin Cash update was activated by the community through the hard fork. On November 16, 2018, a hashwar occurred that resulted in a split between Bitcoin SV and Bitcoin ABC.

What Bitcoin Cash is used for

The goal of BCH is to address scalability issues associated with the 1MB limit in Bitcoin Core, which contributed to higher fees and long transfer times. With the expansion of the block limit, the network seeks to offer a faster, lower-cost payment flow within on-chain use.
