CoinShares announced the launch of its UCITS platform, expanding its presence in the European regulated investment fund market. The initiative marks a new stage in the asset manager's strategy, which now operates beyond cryptocurrency-linked exchange-traded products (ETPs), incorporating a structure aimed at the development of traditional funds.
With the new platform, the company gains a scalable model to create and manage regulated funds under UCITS rules, one of the investment structures most widely used by institutional investors in Europe. The expectation is to expand the product offering and serve an audience that, until now, faced restrictions on investing in cryptocurrency ETPs.
“This is not simply the launch of another investment product. It marks our entry into the UCITS market with a platform that allows us to develop and launch regulated investment funds under one of the most recognized fund structures worldwide,” said Jean-Marie Mognetti, co-founder and chief executive officer of CoinShares.
According to the asset manager, many pension funds, insurers, and private banks cannot invest directly in cryptocurrency ETPs, even when these products are physically backed. By using a UCITS structure, CoinShares now offers its strategies in a format compatible with the investment policies adopted by these institutions.
The change also opens space for the entry of new institutional investors, expanding the company's reach in the asset management segment. In addition, the platform creates a foundation for the launch of new funds focused on the cryptocurrency market.
“The platform expands the range of investors we can serve, creates an additional source of recurring revenue from management fees, and provides us with a replicable structure from which we can launch future investment strategies,” Mognetti added.
The platform's first product is the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining UCITS ETF, a fund that offers exposure to the Bitcoin mining sector. The ETF began trading on Deutsche Börse Xetra, one of Europe's main stock exchanges.
The platform received authorization from the Central Bank of Ireland, allowing its regulatory structure to be reused in future launches. According to CoinShares, this reduces costs, simplifies the process of developing new products, and accelerates the creation of cryptocurrency-related strategies and thematic funds under the UCITS standard.
By adopting this model, the asset manager expands its operations in the European asset management market and establishes a foundation to expand its portfolio of regulated funds, directing its offering to institutional investors who prioritize investment vehicles compatible with UCITS rules.
