Circle acquired important assets from IBM's blockchain patent portfolio. The agreement expands the company's intellectual property and reinforces its role in blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
According to Circle, the portfolio includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 granted patents in different countries.
The technologies cover blockchain, banking services, finance, and insurance. They also include enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations.
With the acquisition, Circle says it has become the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States. The company now has a larger intellectual property base to develop on-chain financial products.
The strategy is linked to different company projects. These include USDC, the Circle Payments Network, the Arc blockchain, and new financial tools based on on-chain technology.
The Circle Payments Network was created to facilitate global money movements. Arc, meanwhile, is an enterprise blockchain that the company positions as economic infrastructure for financial applications on the internet.
Sarah Wilson, Circle's chief legal officer and corporate secretary, highlighted the importance of intellectual property for the company's plans.
According to Wilson, the patents are essential to expand adoption of on-chain infrastructure. She also said that IBM has a relevant history of technological innovation.
For Circle, the acquisition increases its ability to develop the infrastructure needed for so-called internet-native finance. The company will also be able to explore new applications related to blockchain and financial services.
The amounts involved in the transaction were not disclosed by the companies. Circle and IBM also plan to evaluate other commercial opportunities after the agreement.
The acquisition comes as Circle expands its role beyond USDC. The company has been developing payment networks, blockchain infrastructure, and on-chain products aimed at businesses and global users.
The acquired IBM portfolio adds a significant layer of intellectual property to this strategy. With hundreds of patent families and registrations in different markets, Circle now has new technological resources for its upcoming blockchain initiatives.
