- Tim Walz leads bets as Harris's running mate.
- Polymarket is key in crypto election predictions.
- Fluctuations indicate a tight race for vice president.
In the recent movement on the betting crypto Polymarket, Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota, significantly advanced over Josh Shapiro, governor of Pennsylvania, in the choice to be Kamala Harris's running mate in the Democratic presidential race.
Walz saw his odds rise to 100%, while Shapiro, previously favored, experienced a drop from 64% to 1%.
The fluctuations in Shapiro's betting came shortly after John Fetterman, a senator from Pennsylvania, expressed concerns about Harris' candidacy. Another name that lost prominence was that of Senator Mark Kelly, from Arizona, whose chances collapsed to a mere 1%. Harris' decisive interviews with Walz, Shapiro and Kelly took place at her residence in Washington, DC, with the vice announcement scheduled for next Tuesday.
Polymarket, a platform based on the Ethereum blockchain and the second-layer Polygon protocol, has quickly established itself as one of the main platforms for election predictions in the United States. On the platform, users trade shares of possible election results, which are valued at $1 if correct or lose value completely if wrong.
This turnaround in the vice preselection comes two weeks after Joe Biden dramatically withdrew from the presidential race, leaving Harris ahead of the Democratic nomination through a virtual call. His choice of running mate is crucial, especially as Harris prepares to face Republican Donald Trump in the November 5 election. Trump, once a favorite among bettors, has seen his odds fall drastically since Biden's departure and Harris' rise.
At the time of writing this article, Trump maintained a 53% chance against Harris' 46%.
