Recently, Bitcoin enthusiast and historian Pete Rizzo brought to light a digital relic from the cryptocurrency’s origins. In a Twitter post, he presented a screenshot dated January 31, 2009, showing the first Bitcoin website, on the very day that the currency’s value was still zero. With the words “What the first Bitcoin website looked like when the price was $0, exactly 16 years ago,” Rizzo provides us with a window into the technological past.

— The Bitcoin Historian (@pete_rizzo_) January 31, 2025

The image released by Rizzo is a time capsule showing the early Bitcoin.org interface. At the time, the site housed details about Bitcoin v0.1, the currency’s first software, released just a few weeks earlier on January 9, 2009. Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s anonymous creator, had launched the cryptocurrency on October 31, 2008, with a manifesto emailed to a group of crypto enthusiasts. Nakamoto described Bitcoin as “a new peer-to-peer electronic cash system without the need for a trusted third party.”

In the white paper attached to the email, Nakamoto outlined the fundamentals of cryptocurrency in four essential points: peer-to-peer operation to avoid double spending, independence from financial intermediaries, user anonymity, and the use of a Proof of Work mechanism for the issuance and security of the currency.

Nakamoto also set in the document that Bitcoin would have an issuance limit of 21 million units, establishing a ceiling for its mining until the year 2140, a measure to ensure its scarcity. Information updated until October 2021 indicates that around 18,8 million of these units have already been mined, according to data collected by Coingecko.

The first Bitcoin block, known as the Genesis Block, was mined on January 3, 2009, and included an encrypted message that reflected the economic situation at the time: “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”.

Satoshi Nakamoto's true identity has never been confirmed, despite several people claiming to be him. Nakamoto was active on the BitcoinTalk forum until December 2010, when he left hints about the network's security and subsequently left the project, handing over leadership to other developers.

At the time of publication, the price of Bitcoin was quoted at US$100.912 with a drop of 1,4% in the last 24 hours.
