Major altcoins are facing a fresh wave of losses as Bitcoin cements its place as the safe haven in a market marked by geopolitical tensions and increased risk aversion. Data from CoinGlass indicates that the Altcoin Season Index has fallen to 12 — the lowest level seen in almost a year — signaling weak investor appetite for digital assets other than BTC.

This index measures the relative performance of altcoins against Bitcoin. A low score highlights investors’ preference for the more established crypto asset, especially in periods of macroeconomic instability.
The movement has gained momentum in recent weeks, amid growing conflicts between Israel and Iran and fears of US involvement. In response, investors are prioritizing security and liquidity, characteristics associated with Bitcoin.
According to Shawn Young, chief analyst at MEXC Research, the current situation is not conducive to a traditional altcoin season. “As long as volatility remains high and macro risk persists, capital rotation into altcoins may remain limited,” he said.
Over the weekend, Ethereum fell to $2.130, its lowest level since May. Solana, XRP, and other large-cap altcoins saw losses of over 7%. ETH has partially recovered to $2.260, but is still far from reliable levels. Bitcoin, despite a brief dip below $100.000, has rallied again and is trading at $101.000, reaching 65% dominance over the total market — its highest level since early 2021.
Despite this, Young does not rule out a new type of altseason, focusing on Layer 1 blockchains such as Ethereum, Solana and XRP. He points out that these networks support sectors such as asset tokenization, DePINs and stablecoins, which are attracting interest from institutions. Should BTC stabilize and macroeconomic risks diminish, demand for altcoins could reignite, especially if spot ETFs of these crypto assets are launched.
