- Trump secures second term as president.
- Republican tops 270 delegates with key wins.
- Legal challenges persist for re-elected Trump.
Republican candidate Donald Trump, 78, has secured his victory in the 2024 US presidential election, winning crucial votes that will guarantee him another term. According to the projection released by the Associated Press on Wednesday, Trump successfully surpassed the threshold of 270 electoral delegates needed, consolidating a lead unassailable by Democrat Kamala Harris.
Trump's victory was announced at around 7:30 a.m., shortly after the candidate secured victory in the decisive state of Wisconsin. In addition, Trump was also declared the winner in other key states such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, and leads the counts in Michigan, Nevada and Arizona.
During his victory speech in Florida, still in the early hours of the morning and before any acknowledgement of defeat by Kamala Harris, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to illegal immigration and promised to continue his policies, under the slogan “promises made will be kept”. In his words, he also called for unity among all American citizens.
Although the projection of the result does not represent an officialization, this method is traditionally accepted and followed by both the media and the population in the electoral processes in the United States, where each state is responsible for its own count, which can extend for weeks.
This victory marks Trump's return to power after his 2020 defeat to Democrat Joe Biden. With his inauguration scheduled for January 20, 2025, Trump will have the support of a Republican-majority Congress for the first two years of his new administration.
Trump's election and his next steps in government will be closely monitored, given the complexity of his political and judicial scenario.
